How Planning Helps Make Your Dreams Into Reality

Are you a dreamer?

Are you a planner?

The two totally go together, you know.

Okay, so maybe you read the title of this post and thought that the idea that planning can help make your dreams into reality seems a little far fetched.  But stick with me because it really can.

I have a quote pinned to the wall in my office.  It's credited to Leonard da Vinci and it says:

"It had long since come to my attention
that people of accomplishment
rarely sat back and let things happen to them.
They went out and happened to things."

A friend shared that quote with me several years ago.  She was describing me.  While I was flattered, I didn't feel worthy of such a description.

My 2017 planner - well used and well loved

You see, even though my resume looks fairly impressive on paper, I don't really consider myself to be a person of accomplishment.  But my insecurities are a whole different post, and we're not going to dwell on them today.  Instead, we're going to talk about the reason that she considered me to be a "person of accomplishment."

What did it all boil down to?

You guessed it...

Like most people, I have had a number of dreams since I was a little girl.  I still have a number of dreams.  Things that I want to do, to be and to accomplish.

My 2018 planner...we're just getting to know each other.  ;)

Interestingly enough, that description fits another word as well...

So what are dreams then, but lofty goals?

And how do we accomplish goals?  We set out a PLAN.

AHA!  That's how planning helps to turn your dreams into reality.  It breaks them into bite size pieces, and gives them a timeline.

No one ever accomplished anything of worth without a plan.  And no one ever accomplished a goal without breaking it down into smaller parts.

For me, I like the idea of using a day planner.  And I choose to use one with individual pages for every day.  That way I can write down all of the small to-dos that eventually lead up to goal accomplishment.  Or, I can just write down which kid needs to be at which lesson at which time.  That's a good use of a planner as well.  OR...I can write down both. That's a good idea.  Lol!

But however you choose to do it, I highly encourage you to pursue your dreams...to go after those goals.  And make sure that you break them down into bite size pieces and PLAN FOR THEM!

After all, if 2018 is going to be the year of FABULOUS, then we need to make it that way!

If you'd like to try a wonderful planner - Here's a link to the Day Designer which is the planner that I use and LOVE (both planners pictured above are mine)!  It's still January, so it's not too late to buy one and use it to help you make your dreams come true this year! Word of the Year 2018

Hello Lovelies!

Welcome to 2018

For the past several years, I have chosen a word of the year.
It functions like a
one word goal, of sorts.

Since I turned 45 in June of last year, I've been working to make my 45th year, a year of total transformation in my life.

I've got a list of things that I want to do, to accomplish, and to change this year.  So when I was thinking of what I wanted my word of the year for 2018 to be, I decided that I wanted it to embody what it is that I am trying to become.

And with a little help from my kiddos,
I decided that my word/goal/mantra for this year will be

If you like my cute "Fabulous Girl" art, you can purchase artwork, iPhone cases, even a tee at my shop on Society6.

The word Fabulous encompasses the type of person I want to be, the type of life I want to lead, the type of health I want to have....

I could go on, but you get the idea.

So this year, I am going to make my life FABULOUS in every possible way.

You can see my past Word of the Year posts at the links below.

I'm curious if you have a word of the year!  If so, please share in the comments.

New Eyeglasses - and a deal for my readers

This post is sponsored by GlassesShop.com

Hello Lovelies!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!
Our Christmas was cozy with just my little family and it was

I loved every minute of it.

I hope that yours was perfect as well.

Today I want to share with you some new eyeglasses that
I received from GlassesShop.com

I was contacted by Glasses Shop a few months ago asking me to review some of their glasses, and since I was actually in the market for a new pair, I figured I'd give it a try.

They had a great selection of eyeglasses to choose from. With some darling glasses frames including the adorable tortoise shell frames that I chose.  They even have prescription sunglasses.  But my favorite part of the website was the fact that I could virtually "try on" the glasses by uploading a photo of myself and using it to see how the different frames would look on my face.

That has been something that always made me nervous about buying my prescription lenses online, but it took the nerves right out of it, since I had a pretty good idea of what the frames would look like on me when I received them.

If you're in the market for a new pair of glasses...either because Santa didn't bring you a pair, because your prescription has changed (like me!) or just because it's time for an update, you're in luck!

GlassesShop.com has generously offered readers of The Shabby Nest 50% OFF Eyeglasses and Sunglasses (sale frames excluded)

Simply use code GSHOT50 at check out.

Have a great day!

I received a pair of eyeglasses free of charge from GlassesShop.com in order to facilitate my review.
The opinions expressed are 100% mine.

Mini-House Christmas Ornament Tutorial

Hello Lovelies!

On Instagram, the single request that I have received the most during this Christmas season, is for a tutorial on how to make my Christmas House Ornaments.  (If you don't follow me on Instagram,  I'd love it if you would.)

This post contains affiliate links.

And during my Christmas House Tour I promised that I would share a tutorial, so here it is!  Better late than never.  But in actuality, although they look complicated, these little beauties are super simple to make.  You could whip out a few for some last minute Christmas gifts.  Or make some for next year!

You'll Need:
(I've linked to several of the items for your convenience)

A photo of the house you'd like to draw
Grid paper or Regular Paper and a Ruler

Paint Brush

1. Use the photo of the house you like (ideally the photo should be a straight-on view of the house) and then draw the house.  Since the aim of the final ornament is to have a bit of whimsy, a precise drawing is not important.  Grid paper helps to keep the lines fairly straight, however.  Or you may use a ruler if you prefer.

2. After you have your drawing, place a piece of clear Shrinky Dink paper over the top and trace the house using the black Sharpie.  (Again, whimsy is the goal, so this doesn't have to be precise.)

3. Cut out the house.  And punch a hole in the top for an ornament hanger.

4.  Shrink in the oven according to the directions on the Shrinky Dink package.

5.  Let cool, and then paint Mod Podge on the roof and sprinkle with glitter while it is still wet.  (This will look like snow.)

That's it!

If you try this project, I'd love to see your handiwork!  You can tag me on Instagram with #shabbynesthouse.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas House Tour 2017

Welcome to The Shabby Nest
I'm so excited to have you here for this year's Christmas House Tour!

For the past several years, I have been honored to take part in the Holiday House Walk hosted by my talented friend, Jennifer Rizzo.

There are always so many insanely beautiful homes that share holiday inspiration during this tour, it is an honor to be included.

If you haven't had a chance already, please make sure you visit the house just before mine on the tour...

My children and I have been living in Hydeaway Cottage since 2014.  It is our own little haven from the hustle, bustle, and worry of the world.  And I especially love to see our little home all dressed up in her Christmas finery.

Each year, my challenge is to create a different holiday feeling using primarily the decor I already have. I add a little here and there, but what I really love, is pulling out cherished ornaments and decorations and finding a way to make them feel new and fresh.

I hope you enjoy this year's tour of Hydeaway Cottage...

Motivation Monday: Getting Stuck in Planning Mode

Hello Lovelies,

Are you a goal setter?

As I have been working on goals for my "Year of Transformation", I've noticed something.

There is an insidious little behavior that tricks us into thinking that we are working on achieving our goals, when in fact, we are really not making progress toward them at all.
It seems to be worthwhile, because it is actually part of how we get started working on our goals, but if we aren't careful, it can take over and lull us into a false sense of accomplishment.

So what is this insidious behavior that is robbing us of our progress?

But not just planning...it's a bit more complicated than that.  Rather,  it's what I like to refer to as

Perpetual Planning.
